johnny being a man of action and not of words until he meets v. seeing that that’s their love language – they thrive on promises, on keeping their word. so he gives them his word and he keeps it, tells them how much they mean to him multiple times (“i will do you no wrong,” “this stupid wave of relief,” “not more important than you”) and he couples his words with action because that’s his love language.

johnny being freely cruel with his words until he meets v. not realizing until the relic how much words can hurt people. he spent his entire formative existence building up a shield around the words that were said to him, so what does it matter to him if he calls someone a pussy or a whore? but when he calls evelyn a whore in the elevator, does anyone realize he only does it once? he feels the stab of disgust ripple through v, realizes “holy shit. my words have an effect on them. have they had an effect on everyone this whole time?” doesn’t use words as a weapon anymore.

johnny getting mad or frustrated with v after that, but not taking it out on them verbally. only raising his voice at v when they almost drown with judy and he goes “you don’t fuckin listen!” and it’s only because, for a second, he thought they were really about to die.

johnny changing. becoming better.
